Autumn walks in Tuscany

How much we like autumn! In previous articles we have already talked about the magic of autumn and what things you can do this season. We also saw together the recipes of our typical desserts of the period. Today we want you to stay outdoors, as long as time permits and we want to take you around a bit. Let's talk about the autumn walks to do in Tuscany.

What to bring for a walk in the fall

First of all, let's start with what is needed to be able to tackle a journey in autumn. It is not so different from everything necessary that is usually used when you decide to take a walk in the summer; let's say that you travel slightly heavier!

• Trekking boots already tested and high up to the ankle
• Backpack and backpack cover
• Waterproof jacket
• Socks and t-shirts in merino wool or warm and breathable technical fabric
• Walking poles
• Adequate supply of water
• Packed lunch

Now that we know what to bring, let's see where we can go. We have thought of paths less and more distant from our Borgo.

Trekking in the Chianti vineyards

Inevitable trekking, we could not recommend it. The Chianti vineyards are beautiful in autumn, especially those where the crops of Colorino are found, a native Tuscan variety, so called because it is used to give a more intense color to the wine and its leaves are no less; in fact in autumn you will see them turn magenta red, unlike the leaves of other vines which turn from yellow / orange to brown. You can take walks in the vineyards almost everywhere, either independently or by contacting tourist guides or wineries. From Borgo Scopeto Relais, for example, you can take a nice walk in the vine "La Vittoria" right in front of our vegetable garden and Roccolo, or reach the cellars and walk in the neighboring vines.

On the Via Francigena’s Castle

Not far from Borgo Scopeto, about half an hour by car, is the city of Monteriggioni and one of the most beautiful stretches of the Via Francigena, where the castles and medieval fortifications, protagonists of the wars, are located within a beautiful natural landscape. of the '500 between Siena and Florence. In fact, along this path there are some of the most beautiful medieval defense architectures in the area. Like the "Castle" of Monteriggioni, or the town within the walls, which has remained almost intact over the centuries; the Castello della Chiocciola, so called because of the spiral staircase located in the high cylindrical tower, and the Castel Petraio, an important hub of the communication routes of the time.

Walk in the Casentino Forests

A walk in the Casentino forests is ideal for rediscovering true contact with nature. Moving a long way away from Chianti, you can reach the Casentinesi Forest National Park in a couple of hours by car, on the border between Tuscany and Romagna. It is a hilly-mountainous area, very rich in fauna and vegetation, where in autumn you can admire the spectacle of the foliage, given the great vastness of trees that covers 80% of the territory, mainly beech and chestnut trees. The area is also rich in streams and hermitages. Thanks to its surface of 36,846 hectares you can do many walks and routes, more or less difficult, preferably accompanied by a tourist guide who knows the area well.
